Domain transfer checklist: codes, status and continuity

A registrar transfer is different from moving a website or changing DNS hosting. Define the goal as moving registration management first. Keeping other infrastructure stable can reduce disruption and simplify troubleshooting.

Verify eligibility before requesting a code

Check the domain's current status, expiry and the losing registrar's transfer conditions. Registration history, recent changes, disputes or payment issues can affect eligibility. Applicable restrictions vary by extension and registrar; do not assume one fixed waiting period describes every domain.

Prepare a transfer inventory

• Confirm access to the current registrar account and required notices.
• Export DNS records and note nameservers and DNSSEC status.
• Check whether bundled DNS or hosting stops when the domain leaves.
• Follow the registrar's process for the applicable transfer lock and authorization code.
• Confirm the destination's extension support, fees and registration term.

Track one request instead of repeatedly ordering

Keep order IDs and messages from both sides. If the transfer is rejected or waiting, ask for the specific reason. Replacing codes, repeatedly submitting requests or changing contact information is not a reliable shortcut and can introduce additional steps.

After completion, verify management access at the new registrar, the expiry date, nameservers, DNSSEC and renewal preferences. Any extension of the registration term must be checked against the particular domain's rules and order. It should not be assumed to be identical across all extensions.
