The direct answer
Nameservers determine which DNS provider answers queries; records determine the answers for individual hostnames. A website-hosting change usually concerns records, while a DNS-provider move also requires delegation and zone migration checks.
Nameservers identify the DNS provider responsible for answering queries. DNS records are the rules held at that provider. Editing records in a panel that is no longer authoritative may save successfully without changing what visitors receive.
Identify what is moving
| Goal | Setting to investigate |
|---|---|
| Move a website to another host | Relevant A, AAAA or CNAME records |
| Move DNS hosting | Nameserver delegation and the new DNS zone |
| Add a campaign subdomain | Records for that subdomain |
| Give a subdomain its own DNS provider | Subdomain delegation |
A hosting platform's CNAME target is not a nameserver. Use only the nameserver hostnames supplied by your DNS provider in the delegation settings.
Prepare the new zone first
Export the old records and inventory the website, subdomains, verification records and other active services. Recreate required records with the new provider and check DNSSEC migration instructions. Proxy features, root-domain aliases and record formats can behave differently between providers, so an import alone is not a complete test.
Check which provider is answering
Inspect the domain's current delegation and query the new provider's authoritative records. If delegation still points at the old provider, repeated edits in the new panel will not change the old answers. Keep the previous configuration and a rollback plan until access and related services are stable.
A common question
Why did a record saved in a new dashboard have no effect?
Check the current nameserver delegation. Saving records at a provider that is not authoritative will generally not change the answers visitors receive.
